Faux marble is cast with unsaturated polyester resin, which has the advantages of high efficiency and low cost. In recent years, the recovery of the construction industry, the increase in urban greening rate, the expansion of infrastructure construction, and people’s increasing requirements for living conditions have created a large market space for faux marble resin, faux marble has gradually replaced natural stone with its excellent performance.
Faux marble is made of unsaturated polyester resin and finely ground fillers, pigments and additives through a certain composite process. Fillers are evenly dispersed in the continuous matrix of the resin, while pigments are unevenly dispersed, resulting in various patterns. Compared with natural stone, faux marble resin is non-toxic and does not emit any gas at room temperature; it is non-radioactive; it has good stain resistance; it makes the possibility of liquid penetration less, and stubborn stains can be removed; it is also anti-bacterial, mildew-proof, and resistant It has the advantages of wear resistance, impact resistance, flame retardancy, easy maintenance, seamless splicing, repairability and strong shape plasticity.
Unsaturated polyester resin is an important matrix material for faux marble. Its performance determines the final performance of faux marble. Commonly used unsaturated polyester resins include o-phenylene type, m-phenylene type, neopentyl alcohol type, m-phenylene/neopentyl glycol type, vinyl type, acrylic type and food grade artificial stone resin, among which the largest amount is o-phthalate resin. (1)Orthophthalic resin: Orthophthalic resin has the characteristics of moderate viscosity, fast resin gel, slow curing and setting time but fast curing. The cured product has the characteristics of lighter colour, lower exothermic peak, larger elongation at break and good weather resistance. However, the cast body has lower strength, thermal deformation temperature, poor chemical resistance, and larger curing shrinkage. However, Its price is low, and it is widely used. (2)Isophthalic NPG resin: faux marble produced using Isophthalic NPG resin has good water resistance, chemical resistance, heat resistance and stability. It has high strength and good impact resistance and has become a widely used faux marble resin matrix worldwide. It is commonly used in China to manufacture higher-grade faux marble. It has excellent water resistance, corrosion resistance, colourability, and hardness.
(3) Vinyl ester resin: The mechanical properties, heat resistance, and chemical resistance of vinyl ester resin are significantly better than those of orthophthalic resin and isophthalic NPG resin. Generally used in high temperatures or highly corrosive acid and alkali environments, such as hospital operating tables, pools for cleaning dirt, and laboratory worktops.
